Hey everyone! I just got back from a week long trip to California! I was teaching a group of 18 Girl Scouts how to photograph nature. It was pretty incredible to spend all my time hiking, camping and helping teenagers improve their photography. Many more photos to come soon- I've just begun looking at them all for the first time! But I'm excited.....

This is how gory horror movies are made!

I photographed the production of a short film, and my mind was blown (not literally, though this would have been appropriate) at the amount of preparation that it takes for each brief shot. I also learned a lot about recipes for blood and how to go about obtaining severed limbs. Success!

After my graduation and before my upcoming job in Maine, I've been visiting my family in Georgia. One thing I love about the South is how old much of it is. Cities seem to relish and treasure decay a little more, instead of hurrying to tear it up and rebuild.

In my mind, the colors of the building imitate greens of its natural environment which is just beginning to close in on it. It sadly wears the effect of nature's progression.

To celebrate, I decided to post a photo I shot during my first year in the photo program. Those 4 years have at times gone very slowly, but I look back now and wonder how it zoomed past like it did. I learned so much from my 3 wonderful photo professors, and I will miss the feedback from my peers in critiques. But I'm going to keep truckin' on to see what "real life" has in store! This is Park City during the closing weekend of Sundance Film Festival. Main Street was beautifully lit and energized for the important event which took place January 20-30th this year.

As humans, we always want to prove we exist and want our existences remembered. I was here. We write on bathroom stalls, paint graffiti on trains, carve initials into trees and rocks. We build parking lots, wear down new ATV trails, clear-cut forests, dam up rivers. But in reality our existence is so temporary, and nature will outlast us all. This is no tragedy. Our relationship to our natural environment is elemental, yet as a society we have lost contact with the land. In my images, I prove my existence here on this earth through nondestructive creations of nature’s finest raw materials. I built small monuments that wouldn’t last and stood beside them in acknowledgement. Because eventually we become the earth on which we stood for a while.

I hope to continue this project at a future date. It has been extremely satisfying combining two passions- photographing and working hands-on with the environment.

A perk of my summer job: messing around with camera equipment! We have a lot of great cameras and lenses here that I know nothing about, so I'll be experimenting quite a bit this summer. The first setup I tried out was a Olympus EP-2 with a fisheye lens and a fun black and white setting. These are the results!

I'm living in Maine for the summer! I got a job at the Maine Media Workshops as a Digital Photo Services / Darkroom Intern. If you haven't heard of the Workshops, you're missing out. Tons of incredible professional photographers and filmmakers come and teach their tricks of the trade. And it's located in Rockport, which is a beautiful little town on the midcoast. So far, I love it.

I worked at this fine establishment for a month. I hated the monotony of it, but the whole time I was there I kept thinking about how interesting it was visually. For my editorial class I found the excuse to photograph the inner workings. BYU Laundry does everything from washing dorm sheets to ironing BYU Catering's tablecloths to dry cleaning and tailoring in one huge warehouse/factory. Kudos to everyone who works here- it's a tough job!

During our trip to Miami we visited Little Havana, which is where I met these guys. They were incredibly welcoming and I ended up hanging out with them for about half an hour. All of the older guys were originally from Cuba. I've never seen people so fiery and animated while playing dominoes before; they actually slam the dominoes onto the table. And their pace was incredible! They told me they play dominoes every single day. I just may start doing that....

Some friends and I had a few spare hours on Saturday and decided to pick a place on the Utah
map to visit. We chose the small town Coalville, about 25 mins past Park City. On the way there
though, we stopped at Deer Creek Resevoir to wander out onto the ice and see what excitement
the ice fishers were getting into (above). In Coalville, we found that their main attraction was a Rail Trail which was quite beautiful, even if we did find a poor decapitated fox along the way (below).

I'm starting this series of portraits of famous characters in literature. The catch is, I am showing the characters when they were younger than the time the story takes place. My aim is to portray them before they have become fully settled into character or jaded with life or whatever, depending on the person. I hope this entices the viewer to look deeper into some of these important literary figures.
This first character is Emma Bovary, from the novel Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert.

A couple years ago I shot these photos of a great local jazz band, The Kathryn Merriam Trio. The band wanted to go with a classy but more edgy feel, so we had a lot of fun down by the railroad tracks. I have loved photographing bands ever since.

I used this for an assignment of liquifying and otherwise altering the shapes in an image. It illustrates the issue of addiction to prescription drugs. Model: Emily Munk (not actually addicted!)

This shot uses a lot of sharpening techniques which I thought would be very effective on the texture of the coat and the facial hair. I think I'm going to do more portraits in this style for my advanced digital technology class. Model: Brandon Jones
